Seated Buddha statue made of dark greyish schist. The Buddha is depicted here wearing the sanghati, a monastic garment with flowing folds. His hands are placed in a typical position, the right raised in a gesture of blessing and reassurance, while the left is extended along the body, holding the hem of the garment. Both the transparency of the clothing and the modeling of the body are characteristic of the Gandhara style of the late 2nd and early 3rd century AD The Buddha has elongated earlobes, a reference to his early life as a prince, when he wore heavy ??gold earrings; his eyes appear looking down in an attitude of meditation. Her wavy hair is gathered on top of her head and arranged in a large ushnisha, the Buddhist chignon symbolizing wisdom. The earliest anthropomorphic depictions of the Buddha were influenced by the Greco-Roman artistic tradition, which reached Gandhara with the armies of Alexander the Great at the end of the 4th century BC. Successive Greek and then Asian rulers fused artistic styles, syncretism being a Greco- extremely distinctive Buddhist which can be seen to wonderful effect here. Greco-Buddhist Gandhara art.
