Sri Lankan stupa. Post-Gandhara. 10th C.AD

Brown limestone stupa with two rows representing Buddha. Post-Gandhara, S. X AD Sri Lanka-India.

The stupa, created by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC (although some consider that it has a megalithic origin, in the 2nd millennium BC), is a funerary pilgrimage monument. It is the most important monument in the history of India, because it is the oldest and it is said that it was built to contain the ashes of Buddha. A stupa is a type of Buddhist architecture made to contain relics, the basic difference between a stupa and a pagoda is that the stupa is a building built to contain relics while the pagoda is a building to mark a holy place and is usually located near of a temple. 75x30cm
