Exultet. Codex Vaticanus Lat. 9820

"CODEX VATICANUS. LAT. 9820".- The original of which is preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Library. Austria: Akademische Druck. Verlagsanstalt, 1974. Roll contained in case (case worn and cover missing). The Exultet scroll was used in the Latin liturgy on Easter Eve. This manuscript is the oldest surviving Exultet, and includes both the text and the melody, as well as images that illustrate the song according to the symbolic and metaphorical tradition of early Christianity, even with pagan interpretations, for example, when the resurrection of Christ in the annual festival of Easter is associated with a new life on earth thanks to the Sun. The manuscript was made in the Italian city of Benevento between the years 981 and 987 of our era.
