"Roman bronze military fibula, 200 AD". great variety of shapes and decorations can be found in Roman brooches, which proves the importance that this type of object had in personal adornment. In the Roman Empire, the fibula was both functional and ornamental, since men and women used it to hold their peplos and cloaks. The barrettes fulfilled a similar function, designed to hold heavy garments such as capes.
