Great fossil of Megaloceros giganteus

Large original fossil of antlers and two complete horns joined by the frontal bone of a Megaloceros giganteus (Irish elk or giant stag). 10,000 years old.

The Megaloceros was the largest cervid in history. It inhabited all of Europe and part of Asia but abundant specimens have been found in the peat bogs of Ireland. It lived in open tundras and steppes that covered Eurasia in the Pleistocene. They only counted on the cave lion, Neanderthal man and modern man as predators. The males fought groups of females, fighting head to head, and at the end of winter the group dissolved, the female being the sole caretaker of her calf.
