Guttus Greco Roman black ceramic 400-300 BC

"Greco-Roman Black Ceramic Guttus, 400-300 BC". The guttus is a closed vessel with a flattened globular body, with a lateral orifice with a high and open mouth or a small one in the shape of the head of an animal, usually a lion. It always presents a small annular vertical side handle. The Latin name of Guttus, was used by ancient authors to designate containers whose content came out drop by drop. Their finding in tombs was the majority, although they were also found in a habitat context. Hellenistic Guttus were used as vessels for scented oils along with Lekitos and Askos. They were used both in the Palestra, (the Greek fighting school) and at the table or in sacrifices. This black varnish Guttus is beautifully decorated on the upper part with a circular plant motif.

Very good condition.
