"Retrato de la Condesa de Chateaubriand". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Original frame from the end of the 19th century.
The sitter is believed to be the wife of the Count of Chateaubriand at the end of the 19th century, a descendant of the famous writer's older brother. He participates in the elegant, easy-going and "very Spanish" style of the North American painter. The artist trained in Germany, France, Italy and Spain (Granada and Madrid) and in Paris he was a student of Gerome, who openly praised him as did John Singer Sargent. It was said of him that he participated in the inspiration and brushstroke of Mariano Fortuny and Raimundo de Madrazo with whom he became friends.
Married for the first time to the Aragonese noblewoman Isabel de Cistué y Nieto, it was with her that he made the trip to Japan and the Philippines in 1881. They later settled in Paris where he continued his success among the European and American society of the turn of the century.
When he was widowed by Isabel, he married the Polish princess María Sabina de Goreche and when the artist died, his work remained hidden and unknown in Paris. After fleeing Paris occupied by Nazi troops, María exhibited her husband's work again at the Union League Club in New York in September 1949. 140 x 130 cm. Con marco: 170 x 150 cm
