Joaquin Sorolla. Sketch for Colon (1910)

"Sketch for Columbus (1910)". Drawing made in charcoal on paper. Signed and dated (1910) in the upper right corner. Damaged paper.



This large work belongs to the series of drawings that the painter made as sketches for "Christopher Columbus leaving the port of Palos", today preserved in The Mariner''s Museum of Newport News in Virginia. The painting was commissioned by Thomas Fortune Ryan in 1909 and donated by Archer M. Huntington in 1933.



Other preparatory sketches are held at The Hispanic Society of America, New York.
