"Portrait of the child Mariano Rodríguez de Rivas". "Portrait of the child Mariano Rodríguez de Rivas". Oil on canvas glued to cardboard. 26 x 20cm. On the back is an inscription that reads "Portrait of the child Mariano Rodríguez de Rivas at the age of 10. Due to the painter Julio Romero de Torres, teaching Miss Antonia, the sitter''s sister."
Mariano was a lawyer, writer, journalist and, from 1945, director of the Romantic Museum, curator of the Casa del Greco in Toledo and the Casa de Cervantes in Valladolid, carrying out the legacy of the Marquis de la Vega-Inclán.
His sister Antonia, as shown on the back, was surely a disciple of Julio Romero at the Special School of Painting and Sculpture in Madrid (today the Fine Arts School of San Fernando) where the Cordovan painter was a professor of clothing and served as a model for him in some of his compositions.
The work can be dated around 1923, the year in which, as indicated on the back of the work, the child was 10 years old.
