"Portrait of Teresa de la Cruz". Oil and tempera on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Also signed on the back. Slight notch in the lower center.
Work done in 1920. Cited in an article by Guillermo de Torres published in the magazine "Grecia" on February 20, 1920.
Work reproduced in the catalog of the exhibition held at the Witcomb Gallery in Buenos Aires, Calle Florida nº 364, in September 1922, where it appears with the number 3 of the twenty-six paintings that he exhibited. The catalog was prefaced by Ramón María del Valle-Inclán and was the first individual exhibition of Julio Romero de Torres in Buenos Aires, which was a great sales success.
The realization of this portrait is due to the friendship that Julio Romero de Torres had with the Chilean writer when they both frequented the intellectual circles of Valle-Inclán, Gómez de la Serna and other artists of the literary avant-garde. The subject was introduced into these circles thanks to the friendship of Rafael Cansinos Assens with the Chilean writers Vicente Huidobro and Joaquín Edwards Bello.
We thank Mrs. Mercedes Valverde Candil for her kind and generous collaboration in cataloging this work. 93 x 75cm
