The book of images of Madame Marie

"LE LIVRE D''IMAGES DE MADAME MARIE".- The original of which is preserved in the Bibliothéque nationale de France, in Paris. Versol Bibliophile Club, 2010. 8th, full leather on board with gold fillet and vegetable wheel on the edges. Attached vol. of studies. Eg numbered 139/480. It is a picture book in the broadest sense, since of the 110 pages it has, 85 are full-page thumbnails with a brief label below. At first it was believed that it was a Book of Hours because it contains a Calendar followed by an index, the Life of Christ that also incorporates three miniatures of the Virgin, and the Martyrdom of the Saints; but, although it is a book of devotion, the absence of canonical hours and its liturgical prayers prevent it from being classified in this group. The book must have remained in a monastery until the dukes of Burgundy settled in Flanders at the end of the 14th century. It already appears in the inventory after the death of Philip the Bold (1405): "a book that begins with a Calendar followed by images of Christ and the Virgin, many saints, and that has no text." It was inherited by his son Juan sin Miedo, in whose inventory (1420) it is said: "It is bound in reddish-brown silk cloth with two silver clasps, and with the coat of arms embroidered in gold; a kind of ''book of hours'' that contains the stories of the saints and saints, which begin after the calendar with Saint Anne and Saint Joaquin. And in the inventory of the library of Felipe III the Good (1467) it reads: "It is a ''book of hours'' parchment with brown and gold cloth covers; contains many stories from the second sheet, and ends with the story of the Saints Wartrude and Gertrude."
