"Study for the background of Il Contino". Watercolor and graphite drawing on the back.
PROVENANCE: Collection of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, son of the artist.
EXHIBITIONS: Municipal Foundation of Culture. Municipal Hall of the French, Valladolid, "Private collections of the Madrazo" from January 11 to March 20, 2013. Label on the back.
This work is part of the studies that Fortuny carried out for his important work "Il Contino", a work that from the outset was considered an exceptional work due to its mastery.
The painter places the scene in front of one of Villa''s fountains Borghese in Rome. Thanks to the family coat of arms and the robed sculpture that tops off the fountain, it is perfectly identifiable. The magnificent elements, opposite the protagonist of "Il Contino" will be almost secondary in the finished work. In the watercolor that we present, in a previous study, Fortuny achieves perfection in each of the elements that enhanced and surrounded the elegant figure. The finished watercolor is in the Art Museum of Catalonia and has participated in the exhibition dedicated to Fortuny that ended in March 2018. 25.5 x 18cm
