Njorowe body mask, Makonde, Mozambique

"njorowe body mask". Njorowe body mask

Ethnicity: Makonde.

Country:Mozambique.

After the initiation into adult life of young adolescents, during the celebration a pair of masks representing the male and female gender appear. While the first one only covers the face, the feminine one also carries the torso of a pregnant woman with prominent breasts and tribal markings that, as in all the old masks, are made of beeswax and colored red.

The steps in the dance ritual tend to consolidate the dichotomy between men and women, two opposites, but necessarily complementary for the continuity of the group. It also helps to integrate young people into adult life and create a balanced relationship between men and women trying to avoid antagonistic opposition between the sexes.
