Mask "gle mu" Yacuba, Ivory Coast. On metal base.
25 x 15 cm (without base).
The Yacuba love music as well as women as forces that fill men with vitality. They also value calm and serenity that go hand in hand with feminine self-control. These virtues are reflected in the delicate treatment of some of their masks in which they interpret the physiognomy of the human face as a musical composition of recombined notes to achieve very sensual "melodies": the precious patina lacquer, the artistic hair masterfully braided , the oval of the face, the broad forehead, the half-closed eyes, the straight fineness of the nose, the pronounced cheekbones, the characteristic tattoo and the parted full lips are thus allied with sweetness and feminine beauty.
The name of this mask literally means "female spirit". It embodies the supernatural force of the spirit whose mere presence announces the advent of an important event for the community. In this case, the kola nut offering confirms that this mask was particularly admired and cared for with great care. We must be prudent when assigning it a specific function, since each mask has multiple meanings depending on the ceremony in which it takes part and the different magical substances that are applied to it.
