Kiavia maske. mambila. Nigeria

Anthropomorphic mask.

Ethnic group: Mambila.

Country: Nigeria.

Of mambila origin, very few "kiavia" masks with human features have been described or photographed, perhaps because in the past this type of mask, made of ephemeral vine, was produced in terracotta. We know that only very high-ranking characters can possess them, although we have little information about the ritual use of this mask. Sometimes it has been possible to film annual sowing and harvest ceremonies in which it is verified that due to the importance of their rank they require the assistance of secondary masks whose morphology is invariably animal.

The morphological syntax of its features is familiar to us thanks to Picasso''s work, which also accentuates eyes, nose and mouth in the convex oval of the face to convey a dynamic spirit of expressionist character.
