"Leopard" mask. Democratic Republic of the Congo

"In the beginning there were Pygmies." All Central African stories begin with these words. We can assure that the pygmies inhabited the Ituri jungle for at least two thousand years. Known worldwide for the artistic decoration of their lids, bark dresses in which they draw a primitive symbolic alphabet by means of lines and dots, it is these same designs reflected in the masks that distinguish the clan and the nature of their totem. The highly abstract designs are coded according to the clan''s zoological association, from which we deduce that this mask may represent the leopard due to its configuration and having been used in rites of passage to adulthood as it is closely linked to the figure of the circumciser. 23x25cm
