Zaoli Mask. Bete-Guro. Ivory Coast

"Zaouli" mask in wood.

Ethnicity: Bete-Guro.

Country: Ivory Coast.

This remarkable mask is an example of the refined style flaunted by the Bete-Guro of the Ivory Coast, defined by neatness and elegance in detail.

The representation of the male image is extremely rare in African masks. Although men dominate secret societies, they prefer the beauty and elegance of female faces or those that directly reflect the supernatural. Although the Bete-Guro are characterized by expressionist masks adorned with a profusion of clashing fangs on their faces that come to give the impression of medieval helmets, on rare occasions they produce true "portraits" of great male dignitaries whose function could be judicial.

The poet and writer Tristan Tzara, founder of Dadaism, had owned one of these rare masks since 1920, which was acquired by the French State using the right of first refusal in 1998, now on display at the Quai Branly Museum. 38 cm. height with base
