Austros mosaic, allegory of the South wind

"Austros mosaic, allegory of the south wind". Byzantine mosaic. Paleochristian workshops. IV-V century AD made with marble tesserae in white, black, red and different shades of brown-ochre. The scene is made up of a young man in a standing position and facing forward, with a dress cinched at his waist, holding a dove in each hand. On the right side there is a tree represented, of which we only see a part. The scene is framed with a black curved line at the upper limit. An inscription can be read on the head, using tesserae, in Greek with the name of the character: AVCTPOC, would be translated as Austros, the personification of the South winds, hot, drying, thick wind, associated with the end of summer. It is a scene of a circular mosaic in which each part would have a scheme similar to this one. Good state of conservation, maintains the original composition.

Provenance: private collection, England, acquired in the 1980s. 114 x 78cm
