Oinochoe, Apulia S. IV BC

Apulian oinochoe, 4th century BC, made using the red-figure technique. The piece, with a globular body and a three-lobed mouth, is decorated on its front with the figure of a naked man, possibly an athlete exercising, judging by its position. This appears framed by vegetable scrolls on the sides. The handle area is decorated with a palmette and a band with circles and black dots can be seen on the neck.

Good state of conservation. It has lost part of the original black varnish, some repainting in the black area.

The oinochoe is a type of Greek ceramic used to remove wine from the crater where it has been watered down before serving it. It is characterized by having a single handle, and is classified according to the shape of the mouth and belly. 17.50 x 10.50cm
