Flemish Tapestry Cyrus History 16th Century

"Cyrus grants freedom to the Israelites". Tapestry made of wool and silk. Antwerp Manufactory, Ff. S. XVI.

The field, presided over by the scene narrated in the Book of Ezra, 1. Moment in which King Cyrus the Great, king of the Persians, frees Israel and allows the exiles to return, in addition to returning their treasures. He appears sitting on the right side, carrying the decree. On the left, the people kneel before him in gratitude.

In the background, a battle scene takes place, possibly the Battle of Opis, where Cyrus'' army fights against the Babylonians.

The border, richly decorated with architecture covered with vegetation such as vines. In addition to different allegories and proverbs, among which "Hec Meta Laborum" or "Usquequo" stand out.

No visible anagrams or signatures. Good state of conservation.

*The story of Ciro was taken to the tapestry in the 16th century. There are several series that reproduce the different moments and feats in the life of Cyrus II or Cyrus the Great. The scenes were taken from the cartoons by Michiel Coxcie, circa 1550. In the Royal Heritage collection there are two series referring to the mentioned subject, having one the same but with a different border.
