A German ivory tankard, late 19th century

German tankard in carved ivory, last quarter of the 19th century. It has a cylindrical shape with a scene from the Carthage wars carved in high relief. Side handle with vegetal decoration and figure of a warrior. The scene represents the battle of Zama in which the armies of Scipio defeat the Romans under Hannibal, possibly personified in the kneeling figure on the lid. Breaks and faults (some recent). The top of the lid is detached and the figure has tears in the lower area (right knee and left ankle). 34cm tall
