Batcham mask, Cameroon. It is a large mask made of wood, used during the king''s enthronement ceremony. It represents a figure halfway between an animal, a hippopotamus, and a human being.

Large mask belonging to the secret society Msop that intervenes during the ceremony of enthronement of the king (Fo). This large Tsesah or Tsemabu mask represents a half-animal figure, the hippopotamus, and half-human, with cubist overtones. Batcham means "hospitable". So named during tribal wars when refuge was sought at Batcham chiefdom. 107cm tall
