Vicente Escobar and Flores. Two views

Pair of oil paintings on canvas. One of them signed. Old relining.

Vicente Escobar was a renowned Cuban painter. Initially self-taught, in the mid-1780s he traveled to Spain, where he trained at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid with Salvador Maella and won a prize in drawing class. After his return to Havana, he worked as an independent teacher and eventually worked in the workshop with his disciples Juan del Río and the poet and painter Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés (Plácido). Appointed Chamber Painter of the Spanish monarch Fernando VII in 1827, thanks to the recommendation made by Captain General Francisco Dionisio Vives, at his request he began a series of portraits of the governors of the Island. It is known that he portrayed several Captains General such as the Marquis de la Torre, Espeleta, etc. The National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba preserves several of his canvases.
