(La Línea de la Concepción, 1890 - 1972)
José Cruz Herrera (1890–1972) is one of the great masters of 20th-century Spanish genre painting and a name in constant demand at Madrid auctions. Born in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz), his luminous and colourful painting captured like few others the beauty of Andalusian women, the shawl, the mantilla and popular life, before opening up to the light and characters of North Africa. At Durán Arte y Subastas, we appraise, catalogue and auction his work with the knowledge that comes from long experience in 19th and 20th-century Spanish painting.
Trained in Madrid, Cruz Herrera developed from a very young age a brilliant technique and an extraordinary command of colour, which earned him recognition at national and international exhibitions. His portraits of Andalusian women, Roma women, majas and fair scenes became the image of a luminous, sensual genre painting that enjoyed great commercial success during the artist's lifetime.
After living in several cities, he settled in Morocco, where he lived for decades and produced an extensive body of work depicting souks, local characters and Moroccan landscapes in a warm and vibrant palette. He died in Casablanca in 1972. His legacy is preserved at the Museo Cruz Herrera in La Línea de la Concepción.
José Cruz Herrera's work follows several thematic lines, each with its own market behaviour:
The High-Valuation Core: His portraits of Andalusian women with Manila shawls, mantillas, flowers and fans, as well as his fair and festival scenes, are the works most in demand among Spanish collectors. Format, the quality of the face and the chromatic richness of the fabrics determine the price.
Appraisal and Conservation: We assess the condition of the paint layer, the presence of overpainting or old restorations, the tension of the canvas and the authenticity of the signature.
His scenes of markets, streets, women and characters from Morocco form a very personal part of his output. Their warm light and loose handling have their own audience, both in Spain and among collectors with ties to North Africa.
His commissioned portraits, sketches and small-format works offer a more affordable entry point to the painter's work and sell very well at auction.
Cruz Herrera's popularity makes an expert examination of each work essential. As an auction house in Madrid with a long track record in Spanish painting, Durán provides the highest guarantees:
• Technical and Stylistic Analysis: We study the signature, the painting technique and the consistency of each work with his documented output in order to distinguish originals from studio works, followers or copies.
• Verification of Provenance: We particularly value works with a documented history, exhibition labels or provenance from known collections, which strengthen their appeal to buyers.
• Which subjects by Cruz Herrera achieve the highest prices? Medium and large-format portraits of Andalusian women, with a shawl or mantilla and a carefully executed face and fabrics, are usually the most contested lots at auction.
• Do Cruz Herrera's Moroccan paintings have value? Yes. They are an essential part of his career, with an established market. Their valuation depends on the quality of execution, format and condition, just as with his Andalusian works.
