Roman green glass 300 AD

Roman green glass amphora 300 AD Glass vessels of various shapes (more or less globular body, high or low neck, fluted or smooth handles, etc.) and blown in different colors (aubergine, blue, yellow, transparent, green, etc. .) between the 1st and 4th centuries AD they were among the most demanded glass products. Its success undoubtedly encouraged glassmakers to be highly inventive to create new versions, even more attractive to the public. This greenish colored vessel presents one of these unique specimens due to its globular body shape with a scalloped cylindrical neck, rounded mouth and circular base. It has four handles of a darker color than the body, with a sinuous shape that join the body with the mouth. With a versatility unlike any other material known in Roman times, the abundant availability, lightness and ease of use of glass, allowed the imitation of a wide range of other materials, especially precious metals. On the other hand, the ancients certainly knew that glass is a chemically neutral substance, which makes it particularly suitable for the storage of cosmetics or pharmaceutical products, as well as food and liquids.
