roman red clay lucerne

Roman red terracotta lamp, 100-200 AD, with sculpted vines and ears of wheat, both very important fertility symbols in the Roman Empire, especially symbolic in the territory of Judea, alluding to the fertility of the promised land. The lamps were fed with olive oil and had from one to a dozen wicks. Some had handles to be carried from one room to another. They could also be used by actors in their performances or by participants in ritual activities.

Acquired at auction from the Archaeological Center, Israel, 2006.
