Byzantine-Christian terracotta enchanment bowl

"Byzantium-Christian terracotta bowl of incantations, V - VIII AD". Inscribed with magical texts, these bowls were used to ward off evil spirits and protect family and property. The spells were written in a variety of Aramaic dialects, including Jewish Aramaic, Mandaic, and Syriac. Their main function was to trap evil spirits, and they were often placed upside down in the corners of rooms, or built into foundations or graveyards. These bowls are fascinating for the knowledge they provide about magic and popular belief.

Good condition.

Provenance: European private collection prior to 1980.
