Israelite terracotta wine decanter

Terracotta Canaanite wine decanter. 930-586 BC The decanter is a container flattened at the bottom, which allows the aged wines to oxygenate and thus fully develop their aromas, leaving the sediment at the bottom. This practice was used since ancient times. Dealing directly with the Greeks, the Phoenicians taught them the knowledge of wine production. These were diluted with water due to their high graduation. Phoenician wines had such a long-standing presence in the Greco-Roman world that the expression "biblino", relative to the Phoenician city of Biblios, was used to refer to high-quality wine. This decanter has a wide mouth to facilitate oxygenation and a high cylindrical neck with a division at the bottom from which a small circular handle starts. Its body is wide and its surface is grooved in horizontal lines.

From the collection of Dr. J. Meshan, Tel Avid, Israel. Acquired at the Archaelogical Center of Tel-Aviv. Auction No. 37, April 17, 2006.
