These are the portraits of José Azcárraga y Ugarte and his wife María Isidra Palmero Berzosa, parents of General José Azcárraga and Marcelo Azcárraga (President of the Council of Ministers after the assassination of Cánovas del Castillo). This couple is the one that appears portrayed with their children in the painting painted by Juan Arzeo in 1824 and that was auctioned in our Room in October 2015 (Auction 524, lot 122).
Mr. José Azcárraga y Ugarte, a native of Villa de Oñate (Vizcaya), moved to the Philippines in his youth, where he married the native Mª Isidra Palmero Berzosa, a native of Albay, Bical (Philippines), residing on the island until her death. The portraits that we present, which lack a signature, were executed by a Filipino painter that shows the influence of the art of portraiture in force in Europe in the mid-19th century. 101 x 71cm. and 100 x 80cm
