Pilar Azcárraga y Palmero, married D. Felipe Mª de Govantes y Merino, who was governor of the Philippines and posthumous Count of Albay. She appears portrayed as a girl with her parents, brother and nanny in the painting that Juan Arzeo painted in 1824 and which was auctioned in our Gallery in October 2015 (Auction 524, lot 122).
Rafael Enríquez y Villanueva was a painter and first director of the School of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines. He was educated at the Municipal Athenaeum. He studied in Madrid and Paris where he moved in 1879, specializing in the art of portraiture. In 1887 he went to London where he executed his masterpiece "The Death of D.Simón de Anda" which he exhibited at the General Exhibition of the Philippines and which was later acquired by the National Library. In 1909 he was hired as a professor at the new School of Fine Arts in the Philippines, becoming its director until 1926, the year in which he retired. He maintained a close relationship with the American portrait artist John Singer Sargent. Among his disciples is Fernando Amorsolo. 60x50cm
