Roman marble fragment of Leda 100-200 AD

"Roman marble figure of Leda and the swan, AD 100-200". Leda is the wife of Tíndaro, king of Sparta, who according to legend, after having relations with him, while walking along the Eurotas river, Zeus turned into a swan seduced her and had relations with her. From these relationships 4 children arose, two from the mortal husband, Tíndaro and two from the god Zeus. It is a rarely represented motif, but very recurring in Renaissance painting.

Provenance: European private collection, acquired at auction in Germany, Nuremberg in the 1990s.
