Greek red figure lekanis 400 BC

"Greek red-figure pottery Lechanide, 400 BC". The ancient Greeks were great producers of ceramics, highlighting among them the most exquisite types used for festivities and banquets. A Lechanide is a Greek ceramic type formed by a low cup with two side handles facing each other and an inverse lid, with a foot with a base. flat. These containers were used as jewelery boxes or toilet bowls for ointments, usually as part of wedding trousseau. The lid is ornamented with a seated youth holding a patera and a large-leafed branch and on the other side a woman holding a thyrsus and a situla with two palmettes.

Provenance: private collection of Gary Germer, Portland, Oregon, acquired over the years 80. / Former American private collection, acquired circa 1950.
