Byzantine terracotta lucerne with a cross

"Byzantine Terracotta Lucerne with a Cross, AD 500-700". As of 380 AD C., moment in which Theodosius establishes Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire, Christian iconography invades all aspects of daily life. This was a way in addition to making sure not to be accused as a pagan, since once Christianity was established, the reprisals against the pagans would be very harsh. The cross was to become the most representative symbol of this religion once Constantine I adopted the chrismon in his iconography. The skylights were lamps that had been used since prehistoric times. They were fed with olive oil and had from one to a dozen wicks.

Very good condition.

Provenance: Old Israeli collection, acquired in 2006. 9.3cm
