Lot: 185
Byzantine bread stamp

"Byzantine stone bread seal, 700 AD". Archaeological findings related to daily life and the daily use of utensils provide us with a lot of information regarding society and its roles. The archaeological remains that we preserve from cultures such as the Byzantine or early Christian periods generally reside in everyday ceramic pieces, representations of the Virgin and the emblems of Christ, and ornamental details in bronze. The use of seals or tampons to mark bread was common in Jewish communities. In the Byzantine Empire there were Jewish communities that lived and coexisted with Christian communities, which also marked their bread with a cross. These stamps usually bear the name of the baker written in Byzantine Greek. These stamps were made serially, without inscription, and when the baker acquired it, he added his personal brand. It really is one of the objects of daily use that gives us the most about the daily life customs of the Byzantines.

Very good state of conservation.
