Egyptian wooden model offering bearer

"Egyptian offering bearer, Middle Kingdom (1785-1550 BC)". From the moment it became ideologically acceptable to substitute offerings for their mere representation in wall paintings, it became possible to do the same with grave goods, which allowed the deceased to take whatever they needed to make their other life comfortable. The models made of wood were placed next to the coffin, the most common being representations of warriors, servants working, processing food, praying, offering, etc. The main characteristic of the Middle Kingdom is that a tendency towards a "humanized" representation of royalty is observed in artistic expressions. There is greater realism in general, and in particular in the portraits, and this same criterion was imitated by the Egyptian nobility.

Provenance: old European collection.
