"Roman glass jug, 300-400 AD". This high-quality, milky-green pitcher represents one of the most elegant and refined vessel shapes found in antique glass. Freely blown from light green glass, sitting on an applied ring base. The body has a somewhat flattened globular shape and represents almost two thirds of the total height of the piece. The handle is made by hot application of a thick glass ribbon, in the same color as the rest of the piece, and part of the shoulder of the body, ending under the mouth where it folds. The handle has a convex shape and is made up of two lateral ribs and a central one. In the lower part of the neck we find the decoration based on the hot application of a thick glass thread, in the same color as the rest of the piece, as a necklace. For better conservation of its content, this jug has its original stopper in the shape of a rhomboid. Vessels of various shapes (more or less globular body, high or low neck, fluted or smooth handles, etc.) and blown in different colors (aubergine, blue, yellow, transparent, green, etc.) between the 1st and 4th centuries AD They were part of the most demanded glass products. Its success undoubtedly encouraged glassmakers to be highly inventive to create new versions, even more attractive to the public. With a versatility unlike any other material known in Roman times, the abundant availability, lightness and ease of use of glass, allowed the imitation of a wide range of other materials, especially precious metals. On the other hand, the ancients certainly knew that glass is a chemically neutral substance, which makes it particularly suitable for the storage of cosmetics or pharmaceutical products, as well as food and liquids.
Very good state of preservation.
